Foundations of Emergency Management (L-101)

This course covers the following topics in emergency management: legal issues; intergovernmental and interagency context; influencing, organizing, social vulnerability issues; managing stress; collaboration, preparedness; team building; mitigation; response; prevention and protection; ethical decision-making; recovery; technology; administration; and the future.

Target Audience This course is intended for newly appointed emergency managers from State, local, tribal, territorial, and Federal emergency management agencies, and prospective professionals transferring from another discipline to emergency management. 
Eligibility Please provide in the justification field your role in emergency management. Justifications will be carefully reviewed to determine selection process.

The L-101 is one of the five courses required to complete FEMA's Basic Academy.

The goal of the Basic Academy is to support the early careers of emergency managers through a training experience combining knowledge of all fundamental systems, concepts, and practices of cutting-edge emergency management. The Academy provides shared classrooms of adult learners and skillful instructors resulting in a solid foundation upon which to build further studies and sound decisions. The FEMA Basic Academy course work includes lectures and discussion from technical experts across various public safety disciplines, group and individual activities, and mock scenarios and presentations.
